Horse shall be in general divided into Heavy Horse and Light Horse. They shall train, drill and maneuver together for the most part, though there shall be necessarily some separation for individual skill-at-arms for their specific armaments.
The basic kit for horse and rider for the School of the Renaissance Soldier, Actions of the Lowe Countries, will be for a Borderstave (also called "Border speares", etc.) which would amount to the following:
For more information, review this site on Border Reivers
It is encouraged that all horsemen be armoured as fully as possible, be it with a buffe coate, a maille shirt and morion, cuirass and burgonet, to full cap-a'-pie plate armour. As such, it is of course HIGHLY encouraged that participants equip themselves to the much higher standard of portraying a Demi-Launtier if at all possible. The increase would be in the size and quality (and training) of the horse, as well as the amount of armour worn by the participant. A Demi-Launtier must provide himself with a Heavy Lance, as well as a Corselet and Helmet at minimum.)
It is also highly encouraged that proper pistols be carried by all horsemen regardless of their designation, per late-16th through 17th Century practice. However, as access to period pistols remains problematical, this shall remain an encouragement, not a requirement.
And finally, it is requested that all mounted participants in the school provide themselves with a White Sash (preferably of silk, 24" wide by 6'+ long) to be worn over the right shoulder.
The first morning's training will be carried out in soft kit, unarmoured, but with side arms (sword and dagger) worn. Lances, spears and carbines are to remain in camp until called for. Pistols may be carried on the saddle, and HATS SHALL BE WORN!
For more information (though more for 17th Century portrayals), see these articles on reconstructing the Harquebusier:
Only pistols and carbines fitted with the proper period ignition systems (they being the wheellock, snaphaunce, English-lock and certain French-locks) may be carried and used by Horse for the School of the Renaissance Soldier. It is HIGHLY discouraged that anyone portraying a Harquebusier carry a matchlock on horseback without the Rittmaster's express consent. The suitability of any particular firearm to be on the field will be totally at the discretion of the Muster Master or his designates.
